On behalf of Sámi allaskuvla/Sámi University of Applied Sciences and World Indigenous Research Association, we would hereby like to invite you to 2018:s World Indigenous Research and Education Conference August 22th - 24th in Guovdageaidnu/Kautokeino, Norway.

ABOUT WIREC

The aim of the conference is to bring together researchers to share experiences, discuss issues, tackle challenges and explore opportunities within the indigenous research field. The scope of the conference embraces disciplines as: Traditional Craft and Contemporary Design, Indigenous Language, Indigenous Education, Media and Journalism, and Protection and Management of Environmental and Traditional Resources.

THEMES OF THE CONFERENCE ARE:

  1. Indigenous Artistic Expressions  in a Contemporary Context
    covers both practical and theoretical approaches to artistic practices.
  2. Indigenous Knowledge Embedded in Language
    covers transmission of indigenous languages, transmission of knowledge through language and language as a medium of expressing identity.  
  3. Internal Tensions in Indigenous Research and Social Mission
  4. Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being in Education
    embraces ways to challenge and reshape education grounded in manner appropriate to indigenous worldviews and values, the theme covers education from early childhood to primary school and on to higher education.​
  5. Protection and Monitoring of Environmental and Traditional Resources 
    covers traditional knowledge based research on environmental management.
Submit Abstract

We call for contributions from the indigenous research field. Abstract proposals can be submitted as Paper to a paper session, Poster presentations or Exhibits. Abstracts should be between 200 to 350 words. The deadline for submission of abstracts to the conference is extended until March 6th, 2018. Press the Submit Abstract-link to the left.

The conference language is English, but there will be a possibility to give presentations in Russian with English interpretation. The abstracts should be in English. If you are giving your presentation in Russian, please note it clearly in the abstract.

Early Bird Registration from: November 1st 2017 - May 31st, 2018 (290USD/2300NOK)
Ordinary Registration from: June 1st, 2018 (350USD/2800NOK)

The conference will be opened by United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, and the program includes so far the two keynote speakers Professor Dale Turner and Professor Kaisa Rautio Helander. 

WHEN AND WHERE

The WINHEC annual meeting 2018 is planned to Guovdageaidnu, Norway August 20th to 22nd at noon, 2018, and the WIRA research conference is planned to the same locations August 22nd from noon to 24th after noon, 2018. The WINHEC annual meeting will be arranged by Sámi allaskuvla, the Sámi University of Applied Sciences in collaboration with the The Sámi High school and Reindeer Husbandry School in Guovdageaidnu.  The WIRA research conference will be arranged by Sámi allaskuvla, the Sámi University of Applied Sciences, in Diehtosiida, Guovdageaidnu.

​The name of the conference is Igniting Knowledge Sharing: World Indigenous Research and Education Conference 2018, and the planned conference fee is NOK 2 300 (approximately USD 290) including lunch, coffee, dinner and cultural arrangements but not accommodation. ​
